The Communications team at the Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a freelance Wordsmith (Communications writer – contract) to develop mission-aligned written materials for a variety of internal and external audiences. We’re looking for someone who can adopt our unique voice and tone and authentically convey the Wikimedia story to support our free knowledge mission. This person will be able to understand the Wikimedia movement and projects like Wikipedia, and concisely communicate information about the movement and our work at the Wikimedia Foundation.
We’d like you to do these things:
In this role the Wordsmith will be responsible for writing content for the media, general public, internal audiences (including the Wikimedia community of volunteer contributors), and Wikimedia Foundation staff. These materials may include:
- Media responses
- Organizational announcements, press releases, and other statements
- Blog posts for the Wikimedia blog
- Corrections to media outlets
- Talking points for media interviews with Foundation staff and executives
- Content for global Wikipedia awareness campaigns
- Stories for our Annual Report and other donor-facing brand narratives
The Wordsmith will coordinate with different stakeholders at the Wikimedia Foundation to report and share Foundation-related work with internal and external audiences. The Wordsmith will be expected to develop and produce short-form content, guiding the writing process from start to finish in close collaboration with the Communications Manager.
The Wordsmith will be able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment to communicate clear, authentic messages with our audiences.
