Freelance copy editing jobs are available with Cognella Inc., an academic publisher of graduate-level course materials for both teachers and students.
The publisher recruits copy editors to perform work under two imprints: Cognella Academic Publishing and University Readers. The first imprint publishes classroom-screened titles that construct a more powerful learning experience, while the latter imprint publishes custom course materials textbooks.
The Cognella Academic Publishing division is outsourcing work to freelance copy editors on an ongoing basis to edit manuscripts and short editorial projects for scholarly textbooks. The busiests months are September through December, and March through July.
Most projects need a moderate edit in Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS)–and sometimes APA or MLA style–while tracking changes in Microsoft Word.
Deadlines vary based on the length and complexity of the project. Small jobs under 40 pages may take 1-2 days, while more complex jobs may take 1-2 weeks.
Copy editors will be working on a wide range of manuscripts encompassing different subjects, styles, formats, and content.
To be considered for forthcoming projects, freelancers will need to submit a cover letter, resume, and salary history. Qualified candidates will need to pass a copy editing test before being hired.
