BioNews Services, an online publisher of original articles covering scientific news and developments in chronic and often rare diseases, is looking to hire experienced copy editors to work remotely, Monday to Friday, at home as freelancers.
Editors with prior journalism experience are preferred, as we are a news service and work in a news journalism style.
We cover results of clinical trials, new and investigative therapies, and other developments in diseases ranging from multiple sclerosis to epidermolysis bullosa. The writing can be highly scientific, but the copy editors need not be. Our readers are patients, caregivers and family or friends — not scientists — and the copy editor’s job is make sure these articles are understandable to readers.
Fact-checking, explaining medical/life science terms or processes in common English, and massaging as needed a story’s language to make it morereadable are key to succeeding at this job. Our writers are typically PhD-level scientists with high English skills, but are rarely native English speakers.
